When Lumikai launched in 2020, Salone Sehgal heard every version of the same doubt. Indians don't pay. Sector-focused funds don't exit. India is a market for daily users with nothing to monetise. Her bet was that Indian consumers would spend the moment friction dropped. Cheap data after Jio, affordable smartphones and UPI did exactly that, and in roughly five years they created an industry from scratch.

On The Founder Thesis, host Akshay Datt sits down with Salone, Founder and Managing Partner of Lumikai, to unpack the beliefs behind the fund and what they reveal about how India spends its attention.

Social, streaming, microdramas, audio and gaming are all expressions of one shift, from lean-back to lean-forward entertainment. Salone explains what China's microdramas and AI companions signal for India, the DOSE framework Lumikai uses to judge how products earn attention, and what she calls digital decolonisation: a generation proudly asserting its language and culture online. She makes the case that Bharat should never be treated as a discount version of metro India, and opens up about the startup she wound down with two months of runway left.

If you are building for India, or backing those who are, this one is for you.
